This Is Not an Atlas $3.46 There are a lot of Worlds in the world. It seems that many countries have them. Here then is a collection of photographs of these Worlds, each one a store-front. They were collected from many different countries, by two people over a five year period. Rules applied to the taking of the photographs in this book. Worlds had to be spotted and then photographed off-the-cuff, or on-the-hoof. Pass by a wonderful new World in the bus, pull out your camera and quickly shoot a picture of it and never go back. Miss the chance due to no camera, no film or no energy, never go back. The Worlds are transient, yet we have all seen them, and they are everywhere. This personal selection of Worlds of the world captures the amusement, promise and banality of this frequently used name. Spontaneity is the key rule; the collection of the image the key motivation, mixed with just a little bit of obsession. The result is counter-cultural, so hopelessly and amateurishly unaesthetic, and so typographically wrong, that it sets new standards of aesthetics. Curiously and inexplicably attractive, the images in this book will engage and amuse you. |

The Atlas $17.03 Hailed by Newsday as "the most unconventional–and possibly the most exciting and imaginative–novelist at work today," William T. Vollmann has also established himself as an intrepid journalist willing to go to the hottest spots on the planet. Here he draws on these formidable talents to create a web of fifty-three interconnected tales, what he calls ?a piecemeal atlas of the world I think in.? Set in locales from Phnom Penh to Sarajevo, Mogadishu to New York, and provocatively combining autobiography with invention, fantasy with reportage, these stories examine poverty, violence, and loss even as they celebrate the beauty of landscape, the thrill of the alien, the infinitely precious pain of love. The Atlas brings to life a fascinating array of human beings: an old Inuit walrus-hunter, urban aborigines in Sydney, a crack-addicted prostitute, and even Vollmann himself. |

Massachusetts at a Glance $65.5 Designed for both residents and visitors, this book offers an alphabetically arranged compendium of information about people, places, and events–past and present–in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Its aim is to provide a handy one-volume reference guide to a state that has played a central role in American history since the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620. Site of the first Thanksgiving in the seventeenth century and seedbed of revolutionary sentiment during the eighteenth, the Bay State became a center of industrialization during the nineteenth and of the high tech revolution during the twentieth. It has served as home to some of the nation’s most renowned writers, from Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson to Robert Lowell and Sylvia Plath, as well as some of its most prominent public figures, including Samuel Adams, Daniel Webster, W. E. B. Du Bois, and John F. Kennedy. A professional historian with a long-standing interest in the history of Massachusetts, Jack Tager has organized the book to allow readers to find answers to questions in an efficient and reliable manner. He begins with a compilation of basic facts about Massachusetts, including population data drawn from the latest census, state motto and seal, even the state bird. This is followed by the main section of the book, an A-to-Z list of individuals, events, and sites of interest. Additional information about the state can be found in a year-by-year chronology of key historical developments, a statistical profile of the state’s 351 towns and cities, and lists of the state’s museums, historic sites, and state parks as well as its many colleges and universities, with addresses, telephone numbers, andwebsites for readers who might wish to contact these institutions directly. Finally, an extensive listing of suggested readings is included for those who would like to explore further any of the topics covered in the book. |

Concord Massachusetts $22.15 In this delightful new photographic history, Concord, Massachusetts, is brought to life through extraordinary images and lively text. Readers are led through an exploration of the town’s history, beginning in 1850, when the community’s business and political life was concentrated along the Milldam from Monument Square to the Old Burying Ground. The Concord Free Public Library’s special collections department made its repository of glass-plate images and photographs available for this historical view of Concord. Portraits of famous legislators and authors–such as Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson–vistas from rivers and hills, and a rare stereoscopic print of the 1875 centennial celebration are all included in these wonderful pages. |

Lynn, Massachusetts $22.15 From the 1890s through the 1920s, the postcard was an extraordinarily popular means of communication, and many of the postcards produced during this "golden age" can today be considered works of art. Postcard photographers traveled the length and breadth of the nation snapping photographs of busy street scenes, documenting local landmarks, and assembling crowds of local children only too happy to pose for a picture. These images, printed as postcards and sold in stores across the country, survive as telling reminders of an important era in America’s history. This fascinating new history of Lynn, Massachusetts, showcases more than two hundred of the best vintage postcards available. Drawn largely from the extensive archives of the Lynn Historical Society, the images in this informative volume take the reader on a tour of Lynn’s beaches and parks, streets and squares, churches and schools, even into the sky for some intriguing bird’s eye views, giving a glimpse of everything an earlier generation loved about Lynn. |

Maynard, Massachusetts $22.15 More than 300 years ago, 25 men from the neighboring towns of Sudbury, Marlborough, and Stow crossed over the hills to a wide expanse of rolling hills and valleys crossed by countless brooks, each pouring into the river’s tranquil current that wound its way into the sea. It is little cause for wonder that these pioneers petitioned to the General Court of the New England Colonies in 1685 to appoint them proprietors of the rich territory that would become Maynard. As the settlement grew, industry prospered along the river: first a gristmill, then a paper mill, and later a carpet mill, which eventually turned into a very large woolen mill. The settlers again petitioned the court to establish their own town rather than being inhabitants of the Town of Stow or Sudbury, depending on which side of the river one lived. The courts granted permission in 1871 and the new Town of Maynard exploded to become the home of the largest woolen mill in New England. A century later, it became the headquarters of Digital Equipment Corporation and would come to be known as the Minicomputer Capital of the World. |

Skiing in Massachusetts $20.44 In 1910, the Boston Sunday Herald reported that skiers were swarming over the Newtons, Middlesex Falls, and Blue Hills. The Berkshires provided splendid terrain, and the skiing was inexpensive. This visual history traces how skiing progressed from the pre-tow era of outings on wooded trails and golf courses to the mechanization of the sport. After World War II came massive building, with sophisticated lifts, snowmaking, and all the modern requirements that have kept Massachusetts one of America’s winter ski states. |

The Colony of Massachusetts $5.89 The legacy of the 13 colonies is an essential building block for elementary social studies students as they develop an understanding of their civic heritage. The Colonial era was a dynamic crucible of politics, human drama, revolution, and resolution, in which the formative principles of American culture and government were born. Here are fact-filled, visually compelling stories of the 13 colonies — from settlement to statehood — plus the intriguing, but pivotal story of the thwarted, though valiant, colonial effort at Roanoke. The mysterious disappearance of the Roanoke settlers was never resolved. This mystery of history is sure to engage young readers From the difficulties faced by the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth Rock to the hardships and triumphs of the American Revolution, the history of Massachusetts encompasses a wealth of pivotal events, including the first Thanksgiving, the Boston Tea Party, the Salem Witch Trials, and, of course, the first shots of the American Revolutionary War. |

Milton, Massachusetts $22.25 Milton chronicles the tremendous changes that have taken place in this town in the last century. Originally a part of Dorchester, Milton was incorporated as an independent town in 1662. For more than two hundred years, the area was primarily agrarian, with industrial activity along the Neponset River. Following the Civil War, Milton’s population rapidly increased due to the convenience of the Dorchester and Milton branch of the Old Colony Railroad, which provided railway access to Boston. By the early 20th century, rampant development was occurring on all sides of the town. This generously illustrated volume, with vintage images placed alongside contemporary photographs, shows the changes that have taken place in Milton through the years. |
