Atlas: From the Streets to the Ring: A Son’s Struggle to Become a Man $3.46 "Of all the people who have affected by my life and influence the choices I’ve made, none has been more important than my father." So begins the autobiography of legendary boxing trainer and commentator Teddy Atlas, who grew from the rebellious son of a doctor to a man who embraces, and lives by, his father’s values and code. In this gritty, spellbinding tale, Atlas recounts his fascinating life — as a juvenile delinquent on the streets of Staten Island; as a boxer and Golden Gloves champion under the tutelage of famed trainer Cus D’Amato; as a companion to the dangerous, unpredictable Sammy "the Bull" Gravano, up until the day Gravano turned rat and brought down crime boss John Gotti; and as a trainer of champions and contenders, among them fourteen-year-old Mike Tyson and heavyweight Michael Moorer, whom he led to the crown with a win over Evander Holyfield. Equally engrossing are Teddy Atlas’s accounts of training dancer and choreographer Twyla Tharp for her successful comeback at age forty-two; his work with actor Willem Dafoe, preparing him for his role as a concentration camp boxer in the film "Triumph of the Spirit"; his journey to Poland to choreograph the film’s boxing scenes; and his own performance in movies such as "Play It to the Bone." In sharing his stories, Atlas reveals the philosophy by which he lives. Like Teddy Atlas — inimitable, tough, honest, and wise — this book inspires. It is about so much more than boxing. It is a story of overcoming hardships, of compassion for those in need, of tremendous personal integrity, and of personal and professional triumph. |

Atlas of the Civil War $3.95 Offering the clearest and most comprehensive examination of the conflict that transformed the United States, the Atlas of the Civil War reveals the full dimensions of this historic confrontation. Surpassing the scope of any previously published single-volume work, this atlas pairs expert scholarship with bold mapping to vividly depict the ebb and flow of destruction and reconstruction. Divided chronologically into five sections, the Atlas of the Civil War illustrates every significant battle and military campaign while simultaneously considering the important social themes that shaped the country during the same time period. All theaters of war in which armies fought and maneuvered will be covered in detail and, marking a major departure from other atlases, this volume will devote substantial attention to the nonmilitary elements of the struggle between North and South. Maps of population, economic development, elections, transportation networks and patterns of enlistment illuminate the intersections between the home front and the battlefield, demonstrating with specially commissioned cartography that no war is fought in isolation from the rest of society. Approximately forty three-dimensional maps of terrain and troop movements add yet another unique element to this ambitious reference. Written by two esteemed Civil War historians, Kenneth Winkle and Steven Woodworth, the pithy text is accented with black and white photography and illustrations that bring key characters and settings to life. Pulitzer-prize winning author James McPherson, guides the project, setting the tone of the atlas with a foreword and five shorter essays the open each of the sections. |

This Is Not an Atlas $3.46 There are a lot of Worlds in the world. It seems that many countries have them. Here then is a collection of photographs of these Worlds, each one a store-front. They were collected from many different countries, by two people over a five year period. Rules applied to the taking of the photographs in this book. Worlds had to be spotted and then photographed off-the-cuff, or on-the-hoof. Pass by a wonderful new World in the bus, pull out your camera and quickly shoot a picture of it and never go back. Miss the chance due to no camera, no film or no energy, never go back. The Worlds are transient, yet we have all seen them, and they are everywhere. This personal selection of Worlds of the world captures the amusement, promise and banality of this frequently used name. Spontaneity is the key rule; the collection of the image the key motivation, mixed with just a little bit of obsession. The result is counter-cultural, so hopelessly and amateurishly unaesthetic, and so typographically wrong, that it sets new standards of aesthetics. Curiously and inexplicably attractive, the images in this book will engage and amuse you. |

The Atlas $17.03 Hailed by Newsday as "the most unconventional–and possibly the most exciting and imaginative–novelist at work today," William T. Vollmann has also established himself as an intrepid journalist willing to go to the hottest spots on the planet. Here he draws on these formidable talents to create a web of fifty-three interconnected tales, what he calls ?a piecemeal atlas of the world I think in.? Set in locales from Phnom Penh to Sarajevo, Mogadishu to New York, and provocatively combining autobiography with invention, fantasy with reportage, these stories examine poverty, violence, and loss even as they celebrate the beauty of landscape, the thrill of the alien, the infinitely precious pain of love. The Atlas brings to life a fascinating array of human beings: an old Inuit walrus-hunter, urban aborigines in Sydney, a crack-addicted prostitute, and even Vollmann himself. |

The Struggle for Iran $3.46 When Christopher de Bellaigue first visited Iran in 1999, he found it irresistably alive: under the leadership of President Mohammad Khatami, Islamic revolutionary rule was loosening and the prospects for democratic pluralism seemed bright. But over the remaining six years of Khatami’s presidency, de Bellaigue watched as the conservative religious establishment reasserted its power and the hopes of reform slowly died. The country seemed to turn its back on all that Khatami stood for when it elected an unsophisticated Islamist ideologue, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to succeed him in 2005. As the optimism of the reform movement was fading, international tensions over Iran’s nuclear program were rising. George W. Bush included Iran in the "axis of evil," depicting it as a malign theocracy determined to acquire nuclear weapons and threaten Israel. Yet de Bellaigue’s accounts of the nuclear negotiations make clear that the West’s opposition to Iranian nuclear ambitions has helped both to empower those who oppose democratic reform and perhaps even to convince Iran it needs nuclear weapons for self-defense. Beyond the high political drama, de Bellaigue, a long-term resident of Tehran and a fluent Persian speaker, gives a sense of the complexities of Iranian culture and society through striking portraits of Iranians going about their daily lives–reading the poetry of Rumi, looking at modern art, making films under the threat of censorship, trying to get by despite domestic turmoil and military threats. His keen analyses of Iran’s politics and its people offer fascinating insights into a often misunderstood nation that poses some of the most challenging problems facing the world today. |

The Struggle to Continue $3.8 In "The Struggle to Continue" Patrick Shannon describes the underlying philosophies and practices of alternative literacy programs…child centered teaching and critical literacy…in American schools today. Starting with a Quincy, Massachusetts, classroom in the 1880s and moving through this century with examples from other classrooms and other places, he examines teachers’ ideas and practices in an historical context, a point of view that demonstrates that advocates of alternative literacy teaching need not reinvent the theory and inspiration for their struggle. Shannon reveals that these alternative methods develop from a tradition in the history of American education. |

The Struggle of Prayer $18.08 The key to prayer is "not our action in preparing ourselves, but God’s action in revealing himself," writes Dr. Donald G. Bloesch of Dubuque Theological Seminary. True prayer is not humanity rising to God in order to become one with him (the mystical ideal), but God reaching out to humanity and calling for a response of obedience. It is the constant struggle to take hold of the outstretched hand of God. This striving with a personal God is foundational to biblical prayer, stresses Dr. Bloesch. In "The Struggle of Prayer," he outlines an evangelical spirituality that has at its heart the "outpouring of the soul before a living God." |

A Struggle for Normal $8.98 As the California Limited sped southward through the long, flat San Joaquin Valley, Thomas ORoark struggled to stay awake. One moment he was scrunching around in the unrelenting mohair seat, his head bumping against the mahogany window frame, trying to get comfortable; the next he was sitting up massaging the bullet wound in his leg, attempting to ease the pain. When the train lurched through a switch block, he rubbed his eyes awake and leaned forward to stare through the window, streaked with rivulets of moisture and partially blackened by smoke blown back from the big Baldwin four-eight-four locomotive. The view into the gathering dusk revealed a seamless green landscape of winter wheat, pock marked by an occasional vineyard or orchard, the limbs of its vines or trees barren and scraggly in their winter dormancy. Here and there, a lonely farmhouse and wisp of fireplace smoke offered the only evidence of life. In the distance, the familiar snowy carapace of the Sierra Nevada Mountains was hidden by a mantle of gray tule fog settling inexorably toward the land. Thomas was returning home from the Great War battered and disillusioned, his once youthful patriotism broken on the reality of mortal combat. His muscular young body had been ripped open twice, leaving him with a jagged shoulder scar and a leg wound that would impact the rest of his life. He had killed and seen his close comrades killed. |

Creative in Struggle $16.81 "Creative in Struggle" is the true and frank account of the author’s experience of teaching Karen students in a refugee camp on the Thai/Burma border. It presents actual events but does not reduce them down to a mere chronology. Instead, it charts a challenging reflection on the frailties of being a helper, the weaknesses of being a Westerner, and a realization of the lived meaning of spiritual freedom, even when they are painful to admit. Interspersed between the author’s chapters are essays written by the students themselves. The essays tell their stories, in their words, of what it means to be an oppressed and targeted, tortured and hunted, silenced and displaced people. Although the story is an intensely personal one, through the articulation of the inner psyche, the reader is moved from a safe and distant place of the observer, into one which, at times, feels incredibly close, utterly naked, and frighteningly vulnerable. The reader is compelled to consider the implications of freedom, of oppression, and of personal responsibility. "Creative in Struggle" brings to the forefront of our minds, and to the center of our hearts, one unavoidable and self-evident truth; that their freedom and ours are, indeed, inextricably linked. |

The Struggle for Freedom $16.01 A thought-provoking and passionately written book, The Struggle for Freedom reflects on the culture of African political development in the early years of independence, and offers a penetrating analysis of despotic military regimes. Focusing on the author’s native Nigeria, the book highlights the political struggle of the pro-democracy movements, the lives of the patriotic leaders involved, the bitter confrontation between the movements and the military regimes, and the eventual overthrow of a military dictatorship. It is a reflection on the struggle for ideals against the forces of oppression. The Struggle for Freedom also explores the dichotomy between Africa and African-Americans, and the seeming disconnect between the two. It discusses the need for understanding and a closer relationship based on shared values and a history linked by destiny. The book opens up a panorama of historic perspective and connects us to our roots. Moses Adeola grew up in Nigeria, West Africa and currently lives in Indianapolis, Indiana. Mr. Adeola’s motivation for writing The Struggle for Freedom is his patriotic commitment to a pro-democracy movement in Nigeria. Struggle for the Spirit $83.94 For 500 years Catholicism has been the dominant religious force throughout Latin America. Its hegemony was based on a complex relationship with popular culture; the colorful and the macabre, the syncretic and the purist, the indigenous and the cosmopolitan, the popular and the erudite have combined to form a uniquely creative and reflexive cultural complex. But in the second half of the twentieth century, just as the Church sought to reform itself by proclaiming its "preferential option for the poor," some of the most charismatic forms of Protestantism, carried along by an open and aggressive hostility to the traditions of popular culture, began to establish themselves at the heart of the popular sectors themselves – in the large urban slums, among Indian groups and, increasingly, throughout other strata of Latin American societies. Today around a fifth of the population of countries like Brazil and Chile Protestant, mostly Pentecostal. Is this a new Reformation? A cultural revolution? Or merely another confirmation of the illusion of liberation? Drawing on detailed research in Brazil and extensive knowledge of Latin America as a whole, Lehmann explores the predicament of the Catholic Church in the face of the apparently irresistible rise of Pentecostalism, examines the structure and practices of the religious organizations and assesses the broader political implications of these developments. This well informed and carefully researched study sheds new light on one of the most remarkable cultural transformations of our time. |

The Struggle for Tibet $15.46 China’s decades-long repression of Tibetan independence continues on as its global economic power continues to grow. In response to the former and despite the latter, the independence movement persists, represented here through the voices of Wang Lixiong and Tsering Shakya. Born into the repressive one-party regime, both writers now seek for Tibetan cultural and political autonomy, and although each writer theorizes this goal differently, both are in agreement about what must now be done. The result is this milestone exchange. While Wang suggests the complicity of a fear-stricken religion in perpetuating Chinese imperialist rule, Shakya interprets recent Tibetan history as a history of colonialism, against which the independence movement struggles for autonomous rule. These differing and sometimes opposing lines of thought finally climax in the present struggle for independence, ending upon a joint statement regarding Tibet’s future: true autonomy is the only way. |

The Struggle for Sovereignty $34.53 For much of Europe the seventeenth century was, as it has been termed, an "Age of Absolutism" in which single rulers held tremendous power. Yet the English in the same century succeeded in limiting the power of their monarchs. The English Civil War in midcentury and the Glorious Revolution of 1688 were the culmination of a protracted struggle between kings eager to consolidate and even extend their power and subjects who were eager to identify and defend individual liberties. The source and nature of sovereignty was of course the central issue. Did sovereignty reside solely with the Crown–as claimed theorists of "the divine right"? Or did sovereignty reside in a combination of Crown and Parliament–or perhaps in only the House of Commons–or perhaps, again, in the common law, or even in "the people"? The political tracts written by the English peoples in the seventeenth century established enduring principles of governance and of liberty that benefited not only themselves but the founders of the American republic. These writings, by the renowned (Coke, Sidney, Shaftesbury) and the unremembered ("Anonymous") therefore constitute an enduring contribution to the historical record of the rise of ordered liberty. |

The Culture Struggle $6.53 Praise for "The Assassination of Julius Caesar": "Parenti . . . re-creates the struggle of the late Republic with scintillating storytelling and deeply examined historical insight."-"Publishers Weekly" One of America’s most astute and engaging political analysts, Michael Parenti shows us that culture is a changing process and the product of a dynamic interplay between a wide range of social and political interests. It is not enough to study the prevailing political realm; we also must grasp developments throughout the entire civil society. In short, to understand a society we need to understand the problem of "culture" as well as that of power. Drawing from cultures around the world, Parenti shows that beliefs and practices are readily subjected to political manipulation, and that many parts of culture are being commodified, separated from their group or communal origins, and packaged and sold to those who can pay for them. Folk culture is giving way to a corporate market culture. Art, science, medicine, and psychiatry can be used as instruments of cultural control, and even marriage, the "foundation of society," has been misused by heterosexuals across the centuries. Using vivid examples and riveting arguments throughout, "The Culture Struggle" ranges from the everyday to the esoteric. Richly informed, penned with eloquence and irony, "The Culture Struggle" presents a collection of snapshots of our time that help us understand the world we live in. Michael Parenti is a critically acclaimed author and an extraordinary public speaker. He received his PhD in political science from Yale University and has taught at a number of colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. He is the author of 18 books, including "Superpariotism," "The Assassination of Julius Caesar," and "Inventing Reality." |

Struggle for Survival $65.99 The objective of this research work is to focus on the theme of Dalit suppression dealt with in the works of Mahasweta Devi, with special reference to her short-fiction Rudali. A brief study on the arousal of Dalit writers as a new but emphatic force, has been done in the Introduction."Tears for Sale" hints at the sufferings of the Dalits due to the social, economic and religious suppression and the means they adopt to face life. "For the Belly’s Sake" focuses the state of women who face a three-fold oppression on the basis of gender, due to patriarchy; class, from belonging to the poorest and marginalized sector; and caste, as a result of being born in a Dalit community. "Wailing as a Weapon" analyses how the suppressed emerge out of their subjugated state to break all shackles that have kept them bound for years. The notion of using wailing as a weapon of empowerment and thereby bringing about emancipation in a tough world where even tears can be sold is strikingly expressed. Finally, in the Conclusion Mahasweta Devi’s uniqueness as a non-Dalit writer of Dalit literature and the process of analysis have been discussed. |

Atlas Drugged: Ayn Rand Be Damned! $11.25 Here is the long-overdue obituary for the unbridled greed glorified by "Atlas Shrugged" and the prophet of profit. It’s the "Occupiers’" handbook for how the 99% can take back the country from the 1%. Rand let free-marketers John Galt, Dagney Taggart, and their accomplices return triumphant from their "strike" to remake the world in the image of Godless self-interest. On the 67th anniversary of the revolution, Atlas has been drugged, Galt’s successors are under attack, and all is in danger of being lost–or is it? Worlds collide; loyalties divide. Against the backdrop of the epic struggle between Atlas and Prometheus, "Atlas Drugged" takes no modern-day prisoners and heaps Olympic-size damnation on the losers. This is a work of fiction. But any resemblance to actual events, locales, or persons, living or dead, is entirely intentional. The names have been changed but, hopefully, not enough to protect the guilty. |

A Need to Belong $28.95 To find acceptance as a child within his family and as a citizen within his nation, that’s all he ever wanted. But it eluded him, until…From birth, David Rozinsky fought to belong, first within his dysfunctional family: a mother who hated him and favored his twin brother, and a milquetoast father who obediently kept his distance. As he matured he found that he must pay for acceptance, undeniable freedoms, and creature comforts with barbs of intolerance and a threatened loss of identity. When he and his wife finally say “enough” and emigrate to Israel, the struggle for a place to belong takes on a different reality, as they try to adjust to a foreign mentality and David fights to pierce the bond between ex-army cronies, who feel threatened by his talents and special skills. At the end comes the question: “Which world will he choose?” Author Bio: Although this book is not autobiographical, it is an outgrowth of I. F. Rose’s experiences. In his youth, he did spend time on a Baron de Hirsch farm in Connecticut; he did serve on the Italian front during World War II; he was an engineer in the American aerospace industry, which included testing the huge Atlas engines used on the Saturn moon program; he did eventually emigrate to Israel in 1968 with his wife and four children, where he worked as a reliability engineer for a company similar to the one depicted in the book. |
