The IVP Atlas of Bible History $41.14 A 2007 ECPA Christian Book Award Winner Taking a narrative approach, The IVP Atlas of Bible History draws you into the rich resources available today on the Bible’s history, geography and archaeology. The many maps, photographs, drawings and reconstructions on every page help you see for yourself what the people of Bible times saw and did. The Atlas presents the latest findings in history and archaeology in a readable style that will appeal to anyone wanting to know more about the history of the Bible. The world of the Bible deals with more than the modern state of Israel. Almost half of the events in the Bible are set outside this territory, and much of the Bible is addressed to people in other lands. Thus this atlas covers the world of the Bible, stretching from Spain to Iran, from Yemen to northern Greece. Trade widened these horizons even further to include India and possibly China and the east coast of Africa. The history of the Bible is played out on the stages of Egypt, Rome, Babylon and Persia. These all play their role in the story that has shaped the imaginations and dreams of peoples and nations for centuries. All this, and more, is found in the pages of this enlightening, wonderful book. |

This Is Not an Atlas $3.46 There are a lot of Worlds in the world. It seems that many countries have them. Here then is a collection of photographs of these Worlds, each one a store-front. They were collected from many different countries, by two people over a five year period. Rules applied to the taking of the photographs in this book. Worlds had to be spotted and then photographed off-the-cuff, or on-the-hoof. Pass by a wonderful new World in the bus, pull out your camera and quickly shoot a picture of it and never go back. Miss the chance due to no camera, no film or no energy, never go back. The Worlds are transient, yet we have all seen them, and they are everywhere. This personal selection of Worlds of the world captures the amusement, promise and banality of this frequently used name. Spontaneity is the key rule; the collection of the image the key motivation, mixed with just a little bit of obsession. The result is counter-cultural, so hopelessly and amateurishly unaesthetic, and so typographically wrong, that it sets new standards of aesthetics. Curiously and inexplicably attractive, the images in this book will engage and amuse you. |

The Atlas $17.03 Hailed by Newsday as "the most unconventional–and possibly the most exciting and imaginative–novelist at work today," William T. Vollmann has also established himself as an intrepid journalist willing to go to the hottest spots on the planet. Here he draws on these formidable talents to create a web of fifty-three interconnected tales, what he calls ?a piecemeal atlas of the world I think in.? Set in locales from Phnom Penh to Sarajevo, Mogadishu to New York, and provocatively combining autobiography with invention, fantasy with reportage, these stories examine poverty, violence, and loss even as they celebrate the beauty of landscape, the thrill of the alien, the infinitely precious pain of love. The Atlas brings to life a fascinating array of human beings: an old Inuit walrus-hunter, urban aborigines in Sydney, a crack-addicted prostitute, and even Vollmann himself. |

The Children’s Pictorial Atlas of Ancient Civilizations $3.46 Daniela De Luca’s charming illustrations will stimulate children’s imagination and curiosity as they enter the world of ancient civilizations for the first time. Here is a panorama of the great societies of the past, approached through brief introductory text and child-friendly, historically accurate illustrations. Beginning with the birth of civilization, The Children’s Pictorial Atlas of Civilization takes readers on an around-the-world tour of the ancient world with stops in such places as Egypt, Rome, Greece, Japan, China, Mesopotamia, and India. Children will be so fascinated by the lives of the Celts, Vikings, Mayas, Aztecs, and Incas, they may just forget they’re learning Tornadoes, ghost stories, hand-me-downs, outhouses, Eaton’s catalogues, and barn animals all play a part in her memories. Readers will respond to her unique perspective on the events and experiences of a prairie childhood. |

National Geographic Atlas of World History $13.52 The challenge to understanding history lies in the tendency to focus on single scenes instead of the big picture, akin to looking at a tapes-try by examining individual stitches instead of the entire design. "The Atlas of World History" undertakes a fair-minded journey through the human story by mingling close-up looks at events with broader views of what was then happening elsewhere in the world. Each of this book’s six sections, arranged chronologically, opens with a world map that shows developments at various points of the compass, along with an essay about what was happening and why. Cross-cultural time lines run through the book like a thick thread, tying all of history together. Thus, as one reads a section on Charlemagne, for example, the time line shows selected events happening in Nubia, in India, in China, and in Cyprus. The text by author Noel Grove, a staff writer for 25 years with the National Geographic magazine, continues with a world-wide perspective usually ignored in works of history: "By A.D. 100, when the Roman Empire was in full swing, some Maya cities were already in decline." Events are examined for their local as well as global impact: "Great empires butted heads and power changed hands, but these episodes fed a…kinship with a wider community." Here, then, as Daniel J. Boorstin says in his foreword, …"is an invitation to discover both the mystery and the miracle of human experience on our planet," as Grove shapes complex history into an understandable tale with a storyteller’s eye for little-known details: "Russia’s…Peter the Great died at the age of 53 after diving into the Neva River in winter to rescue drowning sailors." And"Vikings were not just ruthless killers; they traded as often as they raided, and their wives knew rights that other medieval women could scarcely imagine." Artwork, maps, and photographs complement the text to tell the story of human history in a single volume. |

India $90.45 They say India changes lives; because it is more than a country, it is a state of mind. Come on a fascinating journey with Andreas H. Bitesnich as he explores all aspects of existence in India today. With sensitivity, understanding, and unique vision, Bitesnich uncovers the contradictions at the core of a nation’s soul, probing the ongoing changes of modernization on the subcontinent as well as its lingering economic hardships, and documenting all facets of life, death, and daily struggle. His muted shades, wide-ranging subjects, and subtle colorization are reminiscent of a bygone travel album. But this isn’t just a book of compelling photographs. It is a tribute to a great nation that exults in both its modernity and heritage with equal fervor. |

India in the $15.39 "State and Institution Building in Ukraine" represents the first in-depth and comprehensive study of state building in Ukraine. As opposed to previous books, which have focused on the political and economic transformation of the Soviet successor states, this volume argues that a market economy and democracy cannot exist in the absence of an effective state and governing institutions. Ukraine was only a quasi-state within the former USSR when it declared independence in August 1991, and thus it inherited only the rudiments of what is normally considered a "modern state." The development of a viable and capable state with effective institutions was prioritized by the executive and legislative branches who understood that a democracy, civil society, rule of law, and market economy could not be created in the absence of a genuine, functioning state. This study is the first to survey institution and state building in Ukraine by placing it within a comparative and theoretical perspective, challenging many of the current misconceptions about Ukraine and other post-Soviet countries. |
