The Magellan 1700 – Why a Large Screen GPS?
Have you been wondering about whether you should buy a large screen GPS? If you have, keep reading as I explain the features of the Magellan 1700 and where to get it at great price. .
There is a big benefit to a large screen in that you have a larger display therefore making it very easy to see the map info without straining and less worry about taking your eyes off the road. Combined with it’s sensitive touch screen, spoken street names and ease of use, the 1700 is a great choice for larger vehicles, truckers and RVer’s alike.
It does take up a fair amount of dashboard space so mounting it in a small car probably would not be advisable. Some owners choose to use a navigation mat to place the unit on which allows you to locate it on the dash, seat or floor of the car. A Nav-Mat is a very convenient mounting pad which uses the physics of weight distribution along with a special anti-skid material. It creates a solid mounting base to turn your windshield-mounted GPS into a dash-mounted GPS.
The 1700 comes with most of the options found on other popular units such as the OneTouch favorites menu, Highway lane assist, which tells you which lane you need to be in well in advance of your turn, QuickSpell with SmartCity search which narrows down your address and city searches as you type, day and night view, auto re-routing, QWERTY keyboard, and other features which you will find extremely helpful.
When you are traveling down an Interstate and need to find gas, food, or lodging, touch the highway exit Points Of Interest (POI) icon to see which upcoming freeway exits have the services you are looking for.
When turning on the unit, satellite signal acquisition comes very quick as long as you are outdoors and not in an area where there are tall obstructions such as high rise buildings or mountains. Once the signal is established, driving through these areas is not a problem.

One exclusive to the 1700 is the Triple A TourBook. Here you will find ratings and descriptions of Triple A approved places to stay, play, dine, and save.
What the 1700 doesn’t have though is a connection for Bluetooth or a real time traffic update feature. Some may find this inconvenient. The traffic update feature let’s you know of upcoming traffic or construction delays in most major cities so that you can plan accordingly. This is usually a fee-based option.
Still, others like the 1700 for it’s basic features and ease of use right out of the box.
