The Cloud Atlas $14.79 Set against the magnificent backdrop of Alaska in the waning days of World War II, "The Cloud Atlas" is an enthralling debut novel, a story of adventure and awakening–and of a young soldier who came to Alaska on an extraordinary, top-secret mission…and found a world that would haunt him forever. Drifting through the night, whisper-quiet, they were the most sublime manifestations of a desperate enemy: Japanese balloon bombs. Made of rice paper, at once ingenious and deadly, they sailed thousands of miles across the Pacific…and once they started landing, the U.S. scrambled teams to find and defuse them, and then keep them secret from an already anxious public. Eighteen-year-old Louis Belk was one of those men. Dispatched to the Alaskan frontier, young Sergeant Belk was better trained in bomb disposal than in keeping secrets. And the mysteries surrounding his mission only increased when he met his superior officer–a brutal veteran OSS spy hunter who knew all too well what the balloons could do–and Lily, a Yup’ik Eskimo woman who claimed she could see the future. Louis’s superior ushers him into a world of dark secrets; Lily introduces Louis to an equally disorienting world of spirits–and desire. But the world that finally tests them all is Alaska, whose vastness cloaks mysteries that only become more frightening as they unravel. Chasing after the ghostly floating weapons, Louis embarks upon an adventure that will lead him deep into the tundra. There, on the edge of the endless wilderness, he will make a discovery and a choice that will change the course of his life. At once a heart-quickening mystery and a unique love story, "The Cloud Atlas" is also a haunting, lyrical rendering of a little-known chapter in history. Brilliantly imagined, beautifully told, this is storytelling at its very best. "From the Hardcover edition." |

The Police Cloud $9.14 In this funny and tender picture book for the youngest child, a fluffy cloud gets a job (with the help of his friend the police helicopter) as a police officer. But no matter how hard he tries, the qualities that make him a cloud seem to get in the way of his duties. He blocks the sun at the park instead of helping people and obscures traffic at an intersection instead of directing it. Upset, the cloud starts to cry. And it’s his streaming tears–which inadvertently put out a fire in a burning building–that lead him to his true calling in life: as a firefighter "From the Hardcover edition." |

Cloud of Bone $3.46 From the bestselling author of Random Passage and Waiting for Time comes this masterful, engrossing story of the last surviving Beothuk, a World War II deserter and a recently widowed English woman at the end of the twentieth century. During World War II, well into the Battle of the North Atlantic, Newfoundlander Kyle Holloway deserts from the Royal Navy. Now, hidden in a cave below St. Mary’s Church, the war-haunted young man remembers years of carefree friendship and petty crime in the narrow streets of St. John’s. Starving, disoriented and tormented by his own act of betrayal, Kyle hears a low, persistent murmuring, retelling a story of distant, far-reaching betrayals. Over a century earlier, Shanawdithit, a young Beothuk girl, spends her childhood in a place she thinks of as the safe centre of the world. As she grows into young womanhood, listening to stories, sharing secrets with friends and falling in love, she slowly becomes aware that Dogmen are taking over her world. Each season, her people are forced farther inland, away from their own hunting grounds, back from the rich seal beaches. Now the only witness that the Beothuk once walked the earth, Shanawdithit is forced to endlessly repeat the story of her doomed people. In 1998, Judith and Ian Muir are in Rwanda as part of the United Nations team investigating a genocide site. A shot rings out and Ian falls dead. Overwhelmed with grief, his widow returns to England and the abandoned cottage where she grew up. There, an unusual discovery takes Judith on a quest that will inextricably connect her life to the lives of Shanawdithit and Kyle Holloway. In Cloud of Bone, three stories come together to make both an intriguing mystery and a meditation on lost innocence, brutality and the power of memory. "From the Hardcover edition." |

Atlas of Unknowns $4.44 A poignant, funny, blazingly original debut novel about sisterhood, the tantalizing dream of America, and the secret histories and hilarious eccentricities of families everywhere. In the wake of their mother’s mysterious death, Linno and Anju are raised in Kerala by their father, Melvin, a reluctant Christian prone to bouts of dyspepsia, and their grandmother, the superstitious and strong-willed Ammachi. When Anju wins a scholarship to a prestigious school in America, she seizes the opportunity, even though it means betraying her sister. In New York, Anju is plunged into the elite world of her Hindu American host family, led by a well-known television personality and her fiendishly ambitious son, a Princeton drop out determined to make a documentary about Anju’s life. But when Anju finds herself ensnared by her own lies, she runs away and lands a job as a bikini waxer in a Queens beauty salon. Meanwhile, back in Kerala, Linno is undergoing a transformation of her own, rejecting the wealthy blind suitor with whom her father had sought to arrange her marriage and using her artistic gifts as a springboard to entrepreneurial success. When Anju goes missing, Linno strikes out farther still, with a scheme to procure a visa so that she can travel to America to search for her vanished sister. The convergence of their journeys–toward each other, toward America, toward a new understanding of self and country, and toward a heartbreaking mystery long buried in their shared past–brings to life a predicament that is at once modern and timeless: the hunger for independence and the longing for home; the need to preserve the past and the yearning to break away from it. Tania James combines the gifts of an old-fashioned storyteller–engrossing drama, flawless control of plot, beautifully drawn characters, surprises around every turn–with a voice that is fresh and funny and powerfully alive with the dilemmas of modern life. She brings grace, humor, deep feeling, and the command of a born novelist to this marvelous debut. "From the Hardcover edition." |

Cloud of Sparrows $3.95 Once in a great while a new novelist comes along who dazzles us with rare eloquence and humanity, with flawless storytelling and a unique understanding of another place and time. Takashi Matsuoka is just such a writer. His magnificent new novel, set amid the violence and beauty of nineteenth-century Japan, takes us beyond the epic tradition of James Clavell’s Shogun and into a majestic realm of samurai and geishas, ninjas and Zen masters. Brilliantly imagined, gloriously written, Cloud of Sparrows is at once a sweeping historical adventure and a love story of almost unbearable poignancy. It is storytelling on the grand scale from a novelist of astounding depth and grace. Cloud of Sparrows It is the dawn of the New Year, 1861. After two centuries of isolation, Japan has been forced to open its doors to the West, igniting a clash of cultures and generations. And as foreign ships threaten to rain destruction on the Shogun’s castle in Edo, a small group of American missionaries has chosen this time to spread the word of their God. Among them, Emily Gibson, a woman seeking redemption from a tormented past, and Matthew Stark, a cold-eyed killer with one more death on his mind. Neither realizes that their future in Japan has already been foreseen. For a young nobleman, Lord Genji, has dreamt that his life will be saved by an outsider in the New Year. Widely reviled as a dilettante, Lord Genji has one weapon with which to inspire awe. In his family, one in every generation is said to have the gift of prophecy. And what Lord Genji sees has struck fear in many around him. As the Shogun’s secret police chief plots Genji’s death–and the utter destruction of his entire clan–the young and untried lord must prove that he is more than the handsome womanizer of legend, famed lover of Edo’s most celebrated geisha, Lady Heiko, and that his prophetic powers are no mere fairy tale. Forced to escape from Edo and flee to his ancestral stronghold, the spectacular Cloud of Sparrows Castle, Genji joins his fate with Emily and Stark, unaware of the dark forces that drive them. Together with Genji’s uncle, Lord Shigeru, a legendary swordsman knee-deep in the blood of his own kin, and the enigmatic Lady Heiko, the unlikely band embarks on a harrowing journey through a landscape bristling with danger–to prepare for a final battle. Here, on a snowscape stained with blood, horror will mix with wonder, secrets will unravel, and love will duel with vengeance–as East and West, flesh and spirit, past and future, collide in ways no one–least of all Genji–could have imagined. This Is Not an Atlas $3.46 There are a lot of Worlds in the world. It seems that many countries have them. Here then is a collection of photographs of these Worlds, each one a store-front. They were collected from many different countries, by two people over a five year period. Rules applied to the taking of the photographs in this book. Worlds had to be spotted and then photographed off-the-cuff, or on-the-hoof. Pass by a wonderful new World in the bus, pull out your camera and quickly shoot a picture of it and never go back. Miss the chance due to no camera, no film or no energy, never go back. The Worlds are transient, yet we have all seen them, and they are everywhere. This personal selection of Worlds of the world captures the amusement, promise and banality of this frequently used name. Spontaneity is the key rule; the collection of the image the key motivation, mixed with just a little bit of obsession. The result is counter-cultural, so hopelessly and amateurishly unaesthetic, and so typographically wrong, that it sets new standards of aesthetics. Curiously and inexplicably attractive, the images in this book will engage and amuse you. |

The Atlas $17.03 Hailed by Newsday as "the most unconventional–and possibly the most exciting and imaginative–novelist at work today," William T. Vollmann has also established himself as an intrepid journalist willing to go to the hottest spots on the planet. Here he draws on these formidable talents to create a web of fifty-three interconnected tales, what he calls ?a piecemeal atlas of the world I think in.? Set in locales from Phnom Penh to Sarajevo, Mogadishu to New York, and provocatively combining autobiography with invention, fantasy with reportage, these stories examine poverty, violence, and loss even as they celebrate the beauty of landscape, the thrill of the alien, the infinitely precious pain of love. The Atlas brings to life a fascinating array of human beings: an old Inuit walrus-hunter, urban aborigines in Sydney, a crack-addicted prostitute, and even Vollmann himself. |

The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud $3.46 "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud" tells the haunting story of a young man who narrowly survives a terrible car wreck that kills his little brother. Years later, the brothers’ bond remains so strong that it transcends the normal boundaries separating life and death. Charlie St. Cloud lives in a snug New England fishing village. By day he tends the lawns and monuments of the ancient cemetery where his younger brother, Sam, is buried. Graced with an extraordinary gift after surviving the accident, he can still see, talk, and even play catch with Sam’s spirit. But townsfolk whisper that Charlie has never recovered from his loss. Into his carefully ordered life comes Tess Carroll, a captivating, adventuresome woman training for a solo sailing trip around the globe. Fate steers her boat into a treacherous storm that blows her back to harbor, to a charged encounter with Charlie, and to a surprise more overwhelming than the violent sea itself. The Purple Cloud $3.95 "If now a swell from the Deep has swept over this planetary ship of earth, and I, who alone chanced to find myself in the furthest stern, as the sole survivor of her crew . . . What then, my God, shall I do?" The Purple Cloud is widely hailed as a masterpiece of science fiction and one of the best "last man" novels ever written. A deadly purple vapor passes over the world and annihilates all living creatures except one man, Adam Jeffson. He embarks on an epic journey across a silent and devastated planet, an apocalyptic Robinson Crusoe putting together the semblance of a normal life from the flotsam and jetsam of his former existence. As he descends into madness over the years, he becomes increasingly aware that his survival was no accident and that his destiny-and the fate of the human race-are part of a profound, cosmological plan. M. P. Shiel’s (1865-1947) long, distinguished writing career included such works as Prince Zaleski, The Lord of the Sea and The Yellow Peril. John Clute is the author of Science Fiction: The Illustrated Encyclopedia (winner of the Hugo Award) and coeditor of The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (winner of the Hugo and Locus Awards). |

Cloud of Ink $14.42 On the surface, L. S. Klatt’s poems are airy and humorous–with their tales of chickens wandering the highways of Ohio and Winnebago trailers rolling up to heaven and whales bumping like watermelons in a bathtub–but just under the surface they turn disconcertingly serious as they celebrate the fluent word. Under the heat of inquiry, under the pressure of metaphor, the poems in "Cloud of Ink "liquefy, bend, and serpentine as they seek sometimes a new and sometimes an ancient destination. They present the reader with existential questions as they side-wind into the barbaric; the pear is figured as a "wild boar" and the octopus is "gutted," yet primal energies cut a pathway to the mystical and the transcendent. The poetic cosmos Klatt creates is loquacious and beautiful, strange and affirmative, but never transparent. Amid "a maelstrom of inklings," the writer–and the audience–must puzzle out the meaning of the syllabary. |

Cloud Peak $32.99 The year is 2028. Two doctors from Kalamazoo, Michigan, husband and wife arecaught up in an unimaginable holocaust engulfing the world—the Nazi ThirdReich revived and ruled by the Fuehrer on a planetary scale. For years Ethan andElizabeth had sensed that these troubles were coming and had done all theycould to prepare, storing guns and ammo, food and clothing, medicines, survivalgear of all kinds in a cave in the Big Horn Mountains on the slopes of CloudPeak in Wyoming. Both of them pilots, they had purchased an airplane, believingthey would escape in it together and fly to Cloud Peak. But they had to separatethat hot, humid August night when they made their grand get-away. Is this the time predicted by the Hebrew prophets? Is this the time predicted bythe New Testament apostles? Is this the Apocalypse? Is this how it will lookwhen it happens? And how would you handle things if you found yourself and your loved onesalso caught up in a tragedy of this magnitude? How would I handle it? These aredifficult questions to ask and even more difficult, perhaps, to answer. Truth betold, there are no easy answers. Come and see what happened to Ethan and Elizabeth, the two doctors fromKalamazoo in the year 2028 and beyond. Come and live through it with them, come and suffer with them, weep with them, be joyful with them, be sad, beweary, be hopeful, be glad and thankful with them; come and lose everythingwith them, come and triumph with them. Come and see… Frank Willard is my pen name for CLOUD PEAK, my first venture into the suspense-thriller genre. And what better scenario could there be for this genre than the end of the world as we know it? Admittedly, I had always wanted to address the subject of the Apocalypse and finally I have via this novel and its sequel which I hope to begin soon. Perhaps there will be sequels after sequels, the theme of the Apocalypse being vast and endless and the possibilities for more suspense-thrillers being vast and endless, as well. For most of my life I have been a student of history; and I have been an observer of what some would call megatrends, the forces inexorably shaping human events, molding them and morphing them in a thousand times a thousand ways until, perhaps, we see them ever more clearly with the passage of time. This life of observation, study, and research has molded me; it has made me who I am, in addition to the other normal experiences of life, the things we all enjoy, endure, relish, disdain, like, dislike, and love and hate–these things, the good and the bad, come with our existence in this world. But there is another side to it, it seems to me. It seems there must be something even greater than megatrends, and greater than this earthly life of positives and negatives, there has to be. One day there must be a final showdown with evil and a final resolution to humanity’s collective problems as ominous as that sounds. Perhaps the Apocalypse is ultimately necessary. Frank Willard li |

All Saints $1.99 The acclaimed author of The Cloud Atlas returns with a wondrous second novel. Cloud Atlas $23 Newly added to the Modern Library, this edition makes ‘Cloud Atlas’ available in hardcover for the very first time. A postmodern visionary and one of the leading voices in twenty-first-century fiction, David Mitchell combines flat-out adventure, a Nabokovian love of puzzles, a keen eye for character, and a taste for mind-bending, philosophical and scientific speculation in the tradition of Umberto Eco, Haruki Murakami, and Philip K. Dick. The result is brilliantly original fiction as profound as it is playful. In this groundbreaking novel, an influential favorite among a new generation of writers, Mitchell explores with daring artistry fundamental questions of reality and identity.
’Cloud Atlas’ begins in 1850 with Adam Ewing, an American notary voyaging from the Chatham Isles to his home in California. Along the way, Ewing is befriended by a physician, Dr. Goose, who begins to treat him for a rare species of brain parasite. . . . Abruptly, the action jumps to Belgium in 1931, where Robert Frobisher, a disinherited bisexual composer, contrives his way into the household of an infirm maestro who has a beguiling wife and a nubile daughter. . . . From there we jump to the West Coast in the 1970s and a troubled reporter named Luisa Rey, who stumbles upon a web of corporate greed and murder that threatens to claim her life. . . . And onward, with dazzling virtuosity, to an inglorious present-day England; to a Korean superstate of the near future where neocapitalism has run amok; and, finally, to a postapocalyptic Iron Age Hawaii in the last days of history.
But the story doesn’t end even there. The narrative then boomerangs back through centuries and space, returning by the same route, in reverse, to its starting point. Along the way, Mitchell reveals how his disparate characters connect, how their fates intertwine, and how their souls drift across time like clouds across the sky.
As wild as a videogame, as mysterious as a Zen koan, ‘Cloud Atlas’ is an unforgettable tour de force that, like its incomparable author, has transcended its cult classic status to become a worldwide phenomenon.
Praise for the ‘New York Times’ bestseller ‘Cloud Atlas’
’ David] Mitchell is, clearly, a genius. He writes as though at the helm of some perpetual dream machine, can evidently do anything, and his ambition is written in magma across this novel’s every page.’–’The New York Times Book Review’
’One of those how-the-holy-hell-did-he-do-it? modern classics that no doubt is–and should be–read by any student of contemporary literature.’–Dave Eggers
’Wildly entertaining . . . a head rush, both action-packed and chillingly ruminative.’–’People’
’The novel as series of nested dolls or Chinese boxes, a puzzle-book, and yet–not just dazzling, amusing, or clever but heartbreaking and passionate, too. I’ve never read anything quite like it, and I’m grateful to have lived, for a while, in all its many worlds.’–Michael Chabon
”Cloud Atlas’ |

Number9dream $15 From the author of ‘Cloud Atlas, ‘ now a major motion picture starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, and Hugh Grant, and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer
’Number9Dream’ is the international literary sensation from a writer with astonishing range and imaginative energy–an intoxicating ride through Tokyo’s dark underworlds and the even more mysterious landscapes of our collective dreams.
David Mitchell follows his eerily precocious, globe-striding first novel, ‘Ghostwritten,’ with a work that is in its way even more ambitious. In outward form, ‘Number9Dream’ is a Dickensian coming-of-age journey: Young dreamer Eiji Miyake, from remote rural Japan, thrust out on his own by his sister’s death and his mother’s breakdown, comes to Tokyo in pursuit of the father who abandoned him. Stumbling around this strange, awesome city, he trips over and crosses–through a hidden destiny or just monstrously bad luck–a number of its secret power centers. Suddenly, the riddle of his father’s identity becomes just one of the increasingly urgent questions Eiji must answer. Why is the line between the world of his experiences and the world of his dreams so blurry? Why do so many horrible things keep happening to him? What is it about the number 9? To answer these questions, and ultimately to come to terms with his inheritance, Eiji must somehow acquire an insight into the workings of history and fate that would be rare in anyone, much less in a boy from out of town with a price on his head and less than the cost of a Beatles disc to his name.
’From the Hardcover edition.’ |

The Cloud Atlas $15 Set against the magnificent backdrop of Alaska in the waning days of World War II, The Cloud Atlas is an enthralling debut novel, a story of adventure and awakening–and of a young soldier who came to Alaska on an extraordinary, top-secret mission…and found a world that would haunt him forever. At once a heart-quickening mystery and a unique love story, The Cloud Atlas is also a haunting, lyricalrendering of a little-known chapter in history. Brilliantly imagined, beautifully told, this is storytelling at its very best. From the Hardcover edition. |
